Well the answer to that is both yes and no.
The Human consciousness is vast and great enough to comprehend and put into context anything, even God. However our thoughts are limited by the experiences of the material world, so we can only think of and imagine the things we are aware of. Blessed souls will have knowledge and experience of more than one life at their behest, even that too has its limitations. One can study or meditate or follow rituals or lead a monastic life or do all of this and elevate own understanding and capacity to observe and absorb. With this grown faculty we can define whatever we wish to and what better to define than ‘God’. However it will be limiting to cling on to anything that we are able to define, because there will always be limitations.
To truly understand, you have begin with the understanding that “Who is God” and “Who am I” essentially mean the same thing. Start with your current definition of God and keep reinventing it, keep evaluating it. As your understanding, capacity to perceive and explain grows, so will your idea of God. If anything can be defined within the limitations of our perception and understanding, it surely must not be God.
The ideal way to truly find the definition of God is to let go of whatever definition of God you can conjure. Whether God for you is the Idol you worship, or the preacher who taught the truths or some heavenly existence that watches over you, you have to let go of that definition and find a new one. A more magnanimous and meaningful one. Eventually your idea of God will both grow into something huge and into something very small simultaneously. You will come to understand God in a way you never perceived or even thought of perceiving. You let go of this understanding and start with a new definition.
As it may seem, the quest of defining God is a tedious and long drawn task for most. However, it can come to you at an instant. Awakening has its own way of showing up.
You will have to let go of every definition of God. And eventually when you have nothing left to let go of, you become God !
thanks to my friend Chandramauli for asking me this question and hence prompting this post.
